A really interesting article that...Well done Dan!
A really interesting article that links anti-crowd police practices to the "new enclosures" within the capitalist city and the forthcoming Olympic Games.
A subject which gets even more alarming as the debt-crisis is spreading rapidly in both continental Europe and the UK. I do think, though, that there are some other aspects on the issue that need to be addressed.

Kettling/Walling is not an a priori solution, neither is the indiscriminate use of police violence against demonstrators, football fans etc. As a matter of fact, the current academic discourse (in such fields as sociology and social psychology) discusses how a unified identity is developed among crowd members (google: elaborated social identity model of crowd behaviour a.k.a ESIM) and how cops' refined actions can prevent its emergence so as to effectively police the crowd. For example, a relatively new theoretical approach on crowd control, called the Knowledge-Based Public Order Policing model, has been developed by mainstream academics (google: Steve Reicher, Cliff Stott, John Drury -the latter is a well known member of the british anti-authoritarian milieu...).
By having the ESIM as a starting point, those academics have developed practical guidelines on how police forces can more effectively deal with crowds, should a riot, demo or CBRN event take place. It is interesting to note that according to this model those different crowd events should be treated the same way, as the underlying principles of how crowd identity may be developed are the same: that is, by making use of the so-called "graded-policing" strategy -which btw has already been recently implemented by the police in various occasions such as EURO 2004 in Portugal- by communicating with the peacefull e.g. demonstrators so as to deepen pre-existing separations between the former and the more violent ones, etc. etc. By doing so, they hope that crowd events will eventually get self-policed.

Such theories/models/guidelines are not limited to university auditoria. Rather, they are taught in seminars (like this one: http://jdarchive.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/police-cbrn-consultancy.pdf) or symposiums (like this one: http://www.i-psy.com/conferences/sixth_prog.php) for senior police/CBRN/NATO personnel and, to make things even worse, have already been implemented in real life... (http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningzone/clips/policing-crowds-to-minimise-crime-at-a-football-match-in-glasgow/7369.html)

And I'm pretty sure they will be implemented during the Olympics 2012 (check here: http://www.linkedin.com/pub/john-drury/a/a14/396 and here: http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=2166473)... Relevant info and food for thought can be found
here: http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2011/10/486344.html
here: http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2011/10/486740.html
here: http://www.revleft.com/vb/showpost.php?p=2263039&postcount=6
and here: http://jdarchive.files.wordpress.com

I do believe that a research into the involvement of academics with the policing and surveillance operation for the London Olympics is absolutely necessary as more and more evidence shows that police authorities follow a certain model. Wouldn't it be worthwhile looking into the work of those who develop the "dialectics of enclosure"? What do you think?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16924295.post-81921040173062203832011-12-11T00:42:52.814+00:002011-12-11T00:42:52.814+00:00Having attended all the student protests of 2010-2...Having attended all the student protests of 2010-2011 (except Millbank) there was only one day where the protesters retained their power (and were peaceful too).

This was the day when the cops attempted to form kettle lines in Whitehall as the students approached from Trafalgar Square. Rather than play into the usual kettle trap, the students RAN. They ran back to Trafalgar Sq, then through Admiralty Arch. What happened next completely neutered the cops' carefully laid plans - the students spontaneously (chaotically) split in to four groups, all heading in different directions.

As far as I'm aware, there was no violence, and no vandalism. The four impromptu marches were "unauthorised" but totally successful.

The police tactics are becoming more refined, and they are increasingly confident in their use of heavy-handed "pre-emptive" tactics. HOWEVER, these tactics are largely dependent on the protesters playing by the "rules". It took the innovative paranoia of the students to show how easy it is to overcome the draconian set-piece lockdowns that the Met have become so fond of.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16924295.post-20423904379144496282011-12-09T22:14:22.559+00:002011-12-09T22:14:22.559+00:00There are communists and anarchists who right now ...There are communists and anarchists who right now are defending a "communist" academic and member of Aufheben who trains police in CBRN policing tactics.
